chess

Today’s photo shows a chess game in the South End near uptown Charlotte. As the smoke stack indicates the building on the right was an old mill site. The mill site houses multiple restaurants, a coffee shop, and retail stores. The building on the left is an apartment complex.

On a personal note; what I like most about this photo is the couple, on the left, who are holding hands.

Theme day, Great Big Mess

Today is theme day in the City Daily Photo community and the subject is a “Great Big Mess”. Our contribution is a mural about Equity. In my humble opinion (IMHO) equity, in the US, is a great big mess. For example race relations, education, and income all face significant equity issues.

Today’s photo is also a contribution to the Monday Murals theme. I especially like that the mural has a second focus. What I mean is the little gray man in the bottom right who is painting over the colorful equity mural. Fortunately the little gray man is not making a lot of progress in his fight against advancing equality.

Following is a link to a White House executive order about advancing racial equity. Also, we are sharing a link to the today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption: A mural found in uptown Charlotte.

Note that the mural was created by Nick Napoletano. Nick signs his murals as @NAPOLETNOART.

Halloween caution sign

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

In the sprite of the season we are sharing a photo of a Halloween caution sign. If you look closely there is a caution sign about the witch.

Note that used photoshop to replace the sky with something a little more ominous than the beautiful blue sky on the day when this photo was taken.

On a personal note: A few years back we were enjoying a drink at a local bar and during a conversation with a new acquaintance he mentioned that he lived in the 4th ward in the home painted blue. But he did not mention a witch (smile).

Optimist Hall

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Recently, I met work colleagues for lunch at the Optimist Hall near uptown Charlotte. An optimistic team recently created a food hall in an old mill with tables setup for crowds to enjoy their meals and drinks outdoors. Each establishment is a private business and serve foods which include hamburger, pizza, Asian, Indian, Mexican, Argentinean, Mediterranean, and deserts. There are also lots of drinks offered.

The sign, in the middle foreground says “Thank you to those who sacrifice their time and safety to keep our community moving no matter what. You are essential and we are grateful.”

signs

These signs have been shared previously however today they are shared from a new perspective. The perspective shows the new Duke Plaza office tower which is nearing the end of construction .. a sign of progress.

A personal note; the signs are in the park at the front door were my wife and I live. One of the signs states that Charlotte is the center of the known world .. maybe a stretch but I like the sign.

The Poplar

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Today’s photo shows The Poplar condo complex found in the 4th Ward near uptown Charlotte. We have lived in condos for the last 20+ years and there has always be rules against realtor signs in the windows and on the lawns. The Popular addresses the issue in a classy way with a realtor sign which appears to be detachable. It does the raise the issue of how multiple realtors would be handled.

A review of the web address displayed finds The Poplar Real Estate website which tastefully represents the units for sale with links the real estate agents actually representing the sale. Very impressive solution.

eyes

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Today’s photo is a quick iPhone snap taken today when I was exercising. The photo does not do justice for this art project in uptown Charlotte. The concept interest me so I am sure I will be back to take more photos.

The art project is by Aguinaldo Santos, a local Charlotte artist. The collage of eyes is part of a larger project called 1839 Art exhibition. The collage of eyes is on one end of an exhibit in the “form of a model … of the first commercial photographic camera in the world, made in France in 1839”.

Interestingly, part of the exhibit includes the statement that the “Human Eye is equivalent to a 576 Megapixel camera”.

For more information please visit AN.LO Visualization Studio and view the 1839 Art exhibit PDF which comes up from his QR code.

The exhibit can be found at 325 S. Tyron from October 22nd to November 26th.

wedding

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

This last weekend I took this photo of a wedding party outside of Saint Peters in uptown Charlotte. I especially liked the red bridesmaid dresses and the white Rolls Royces. They add a nice touch of color.

Wedding, births, and life events continue even during a pandemic. I observed that some wore mask until the excited the church ands I assume those in a attendance were vaccinated.

bicycle

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

As the this photos shows, there are all sorts of bicycles today. Big ones and little ones. This is a the smallest bicycle I have seen so far. Also, interestingly this bicycle is electric. I assume the primary benefit is the bicycle is that it can be stored in small places like the trunk of a car or in the an apartment.

Following is a link to a Bolt Pro Electric mini bicycle which looks very similar the bicycle in today’s photo. Also, following is a link to the today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption: A mini e-bike seen in uptown Charlotte.

Panthers

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Today’s photo shows a Panthers fan along with his dog. Today was game day for the Panthers and there were large crowds in uptown. I tried to avoid the crowds but was able to snap this photo. There was tailgating, jerseys from both teams, and lots of people enjoying the day.

Following is a link to an ESPN article about the game today where the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Carolina Panthers. Also, following is a link to the today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption:  A panthers fan found in uptown Charlotte.

bird house

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

The bird house is what caught my eye. The human house is eye catching as well. The double porches is especially nice. Also, they have swings and artwork on the porch … the paint is also eye catching. However, I especially loved the bird house.

Following is a link to Google images of double porches. Also, following is a link to the today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption: A bird house found in the fourth ward near uptown Charlotte.

pumpkins

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

I chose this photo because of the pumpkins and the blue flower pots, I also like the prominent house number on the porch. Come to think of it. I like the porch as well (smile).

Following is an article about Pumpkin Spice Latte season. Also, following is a link to the today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption: House number 519 found in the fourth ward near uptown Charlotte.
