caution it’s a tree

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Lately, it has been overcast and hard to find interesting photo opportunities. However, yesterday I noticed caution tape around a tree. Naturally I took a photo and then asked the guard why they had caution tape up. He said, no they did not think people were going to run into the tree. He graciously explained that the roots are a tripping hazard. I assume the city will build a root barrier similar to the one on the right side of the photo.

commerce

Today’s photo shows a sculpture found in Uptown Charlotte. The name of the sculpture is commerce and it depicts a minor pouring gold on a bankers head. It looks like Alan Greenspan may have posed as the banker :)

The following article, from ArtsAndScience.org fact checks, confirms that the sculpture is of Alan Greenspan. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption: A sculpture, named commerce, found in Uptown Charlotte.

theme day, smile

Today is theme day, in the City Daily Photo community. The theme is smiles and our contribution is this family enjoying an outdoor meal in one of the plaza’s in Uptown. During the pandemic smiles have been hard to find. They were there but behind mask. It’s a little thing but I really miss smiles and delight when they appear.

Please visit other bloggers who are participating in the February theme day – Smile.

hard stop

Today’s photo shows brake marks from a hard stop in Uptown Charlotte. The photo also shows a couple strolling on a cold winter day and, looking closely, one can find friends enjoying a walk in the park. As such, I use today’s photo as a metaphor for life during the pandemic. A lot of what we love has stopped. However, love goes on.

enjoy the sun

It is winter and the days are cold. However, when there are warm days local parks offer opportunities to enjoy the sun. This photo was taken on the Green in front of the Ratcliffe Condo’s in Uptown.

firebird

Life goes on and people are still enjoying Uptown Charlotte. As shown in today’s photo; people are posing for photos at popular sites such that the Fire Bird in front of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. The Fire Bird is made from mirrors and is affectionately known as “Disco Chicken” by area residents.

What I like most about this photo is the couple in the background.

parking enforcement

Life goes on and you will get a ticket if you park illegally in Uptown. The next few days will be a mini series showing people in my photos. We will see that even though the office towers are empty life does go on. Just at a different pace.

Another nuance, of life during the pandemic, is that our cars are not washed as often as they have in the past.

courthouse

Today’s photo shows the Mecklenburg County Courthouse. Actually, this is the old courthouse. The new one is modern and functional but not nearly as grand.

However, I took the photo because I liked the flag, the gold doors, and the how the blue sky reflects in the windows.

Following is a link to website for the new courthouse. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption Mecklenburg County Courthouse in Uptown Charlotte.

Federal Reserve

I took this photo because it includes the South Carolina and the North Carolina flags as well as the US flag. The reason for three flags is because the building is The Federal Reserve Bank, Charlotte Branch. It is a regional center for the Carolinas as a result both flags are flown.

Although I took the photo because of the flags; I am sharing the photo because our former Fed Chair, Janet Yellen, was just confirmed as the US Secretary of the Treasury. And the confirmation was bipartisan.

Atrium Health dome

Bravo to Atrium Health, in addition to their partnership with the Carolina Panther’s, they partnered with Carolina Speedway this weekend for a Mass vaccination event. There were over 16,000 vaccinations administered in this drive through event. It was also very cool that the public took a lap on the speedway.

Today’s photo shows the Atrium Health dome at the Carolina Panther’s practice field. I chose the photo to use as a metaphor for light at the end of the tunnel.

Globe at The Capital Grille

The title, of this globe, is Unplugged Fun. The plaque shares the concept that getting outside and playing catch is good for your health and for the health of the planet. Following is an except from the plaque:

Luckily the Charlotte community and Mecklenburg county is home to more than 200 parks and has over 21,000 acres of open space .. When fun is unplugged, kids will get more exercise and become more creative while reducing their carbon footprint.

Note that the artist were students from Francis W. Parker School.

Bernie enjoying music

Joining the Bernie meme craze, we are sharing this photo of Bernie enjoying music in Uptown Charlotte. I thought it was very cool that Bernie put his meme photo on a tee-shirt and “100% of the proceeds go toward Meals on Wheels Vermont”.

contacts globe

Today’s photo shows one of my favorite Cool Globes in Uptown Charlotte. It is called Recycling and is specific to contact lenses. I like this globe because of the beautiful painting and I like the message. Following is an excerpt from the plaque on the globe.

Contact lenses are small enough to be considered a microplastic in terms of pollution .. adding to the hundreds of thousands of tons of microplastic floating in our oceans .. recycling .. through sites like Terracycle.

Following is a link to the Terracycle webite. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption Cool Globes in Charlotte. This is my favorite.

Unity is Strength

There are globes on display in Uptown Charlotte. The exhibit is called Cool Globes. The plaque says:

Climate change is a global problem, and solving it will require global solutions … the solutions that will power our future work best and have an exponentially better outcome when we work together.

Following is a link to the Cool Globes website. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption Cool Globes in Charlotte. This one is called Unity is Strength.

Continuum

While on a walk through Uptown I took this photo with my iPhone. Set my camera on a 10 second delay, placed my phone on the ground under the painting, and this is the result.

The art work is a fresco by Ben Long and can be found at the Trans-America Dome. An outdoor fresco in a lighted dome.

A plaque says that “The title alludes to the continuous nature of life, the cycle of destruction and rebirth.”

Following is an article from Ben Long’s website.

windowsill

photo taken by Denton Harryman and shared on Flickr as creative commons (CC0)

Apples on a windowsill were found in the 4th ward of Uptown Charlotte. I think there is a song by that title. Also, there are numerous internet images of apples on a windowsill. However, I don’t know why this would be done. So I googled the subject. Following are a few possibilities.

  • Storing apples on your windowsill is likely to increase the amount of healthy polyphenols in their skin
  • bring prosperity
  • from the poem “The act of loving” by Karen Ethelsdattar

Following is a link showing internet images of apples on a windowsill. Also, a link has been included for today’s photo saved on Flickr with the caption Windowsill apples found in Uptown Charlotte.
