Campbell’s Greenhouses

One of the highlights of our weekend was to shop for orchids Campbell’s Greenhouses in Dilworth near uptown Charlotte. Their orchids make me look I know what I’m doing. Actually the have a program where you return your orchid after the blooms have fallen and then a year later it is booming again. You pay once and then pay a small fee for them to care for your orchid.

Uptown art

by Denton
Today’s photo looks the opposite direction from the two photos shared the previous days. The sun is prominent in the photo as is the Uptown art. The is a similar piece of art on the other side of the street. Jointly they welcome visitors to Uptown Charlotte.

This photos was taken at intersection of Interstate 277 and South Tryon. Following is a link to websites for the Uptown Museums.

Harvey B. Gantt Center

the Harvey B. Ghatt Center in Uptown Charlotte
This photo shows a wider angle from yesterday’s photo. The building in the foreground is the Harvey B. Gantt Center, for African American Arts and Culture. It is a beautiful building with interesting architecture and outstanding exhibits … the parking lot, in the photo, will soon be a new office tower.

challenges

Challenges of taking photos
This photo presented challenges given the shadow and light contrast. In addition there was distortion, in the angle of the buildings, which is a common challenge with close up skylines. Thanks to photo shop I was pleased with the results.

The buildings in the photo (from left to right) include: the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art400 South Tryon300 South Tryon … the Bank of America CenterThree Wells Fargo Center … and the Ratcliffe Condos.

This photo was taken near the intersection of East Stonewall and North Tryon, looking North East.

Lemony Snicket

Lemony Snicket is being performed in Charlotte this weekend
I took today’s photo because of the lighting, which I thought was especially appealing. However, by chance the photo also include a sign advertising a performance, by the Charlotte Symphony called, Lemony Snicket’s. We are pleased to be taking our grandson to the performance this weekend. The event website shares the following description:

Join us for mystery, magic and music in this special program that features an orchestral “whodunit” with Lemony Snicket’s “The Composer Is Dead” in which the entire orchestra is under investigation!

The performance will be at the Knight Theater at 430 S Tryon St. Following is a link to the Lemony Snicket’s event page.

Symphony

The Charlotte Symphony
Saturday evening we enjoyed the Charlotte Symphony along with a large crowd of music lovers. Note that Charlotte was experiencing a Winter weather alert on Saturday. It was very impressive that all of the Symphony members and roughly 75% of the crowd braved the ice and cold temperatures … Connie and I enjoyed the 4 block stroll from our condo to the Belk Theater.

Jazz at the Bechtler Museum

Jazz at the Bechtler
Friday night we enjoyed jazz at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. As normal we enjoyed the music. However, I was especially interested in a couple of comments from the stage which I would like to share. Specifically it was mentioned that “2017 is the 175th anniversary of invention of the saxophone.” Also, another comment was made. Something along the lines of: “John Taylor was president in 1842 when the saxophone was invented. But really, in the course of history, what does it matter who the president was”.

starting the new year on the right foot

right foot
Today’s photo is a metaphor for my New Year wishes. Specifically, the idea is starting the new year on the right foot.

My New Years wishes include the hope that our elected officials will govern wisely with humility and kindness. Hopefully they will reflect on the positive benefits diversity brings to our society. And that the decisions they take will be for the benefit of everyone. That their decisions and actions take long term impacts into account such that the environment will be protected for future generations.

Also, I hope that companies retain the best practices implemented to satisfy government regulations. And that proposed corporate tax reductions are put to uses which benefit all stack holders including the employees.

In addition, I hope that individuals continue to make immigrants feel welcome. Remembering that most of our ancestors were immigrants. Also, I hope that we find the wisdom to ignore fake news and support our established media organizations.

I personally think it is important we preserve and exercise our first amendment rights. And that when we exercise our freedom of speech that we do so in a civil manner.
