Mint Museum

The Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte
The Mint Museum is one of Uptown Charlotte’s treasures … it not only houses great art … the building itself is a work or art. Their website says it was designed by Machado and Silvetti Associates. Personally I like the lines and geometry of the building (smile).

This photo was taken at 500 South Tryon Street. Following is a link to the Mint Museum Uptown’s website

gospel music in front of Il Grande Disco

Sunday morning gospel music in front of Il Grande Disco at Independence Square in Uptown Charlotte.
On a pleasant Sunday stroll, through Uptown Charlotte, we were treated to gospel music in front of Il Grande Disco at Independence Square in Uptown Charlotte. The art was created by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro who created four similar sculptors which can be found in Milan Italy, Chicago, PepsiCo Headquarters in Purchase NY, and Darmstadt Germany. The art has also been featured in several movies filmed in Charlotte, one of those being the 2002 film Juwanna Mann.

Part of the plaque states. “Our life today is one of crisis…of movement…of tension. We do not know what our world will become. I try to say something about this uncertainty in my work”.

This photo was taken at the intersection of Trade Street and Tyron Street. There is an interesting article at about.com.

Firebird at the Museum of Modern Art

The Firebird stands outisde of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Uptown Charlotte
The firebird at the Museum of Modern Art is a commonly photographed piece of art in Charlotte. Given it is covered in mirrors it presents many photo opportunities on bright sunny days. In fact, September of 2011, I shared a self portrait taken from the reflections from the mirrors. However, for this post I chose to share a photo of the firebird in the early morning with the lights in the background.

Notice that the sculpture is a bird-like creature which sits on a perch. Both the firebird and perch are covered in mirrors so it is easy to envision this is something other than a bird … a cowboy perhaps (smile).

The firebird stands in front of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Uptown Charlotte. The photo was taken at the intersection of Tryon Street and Levine Avenue of the Arts. The firebird was created in 1991 by the French/American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Interestingly the press release states that it is “privately-owned public art” and is a permanent fixture in the Bechtler Museum.
